It takes a lot of tape to polish your MINI
Started detailing the MINI a few days ago. Now onto the machine polish stage.

Wow, I had never seen someone mask there car before polishing like that. Is that totally necessary though? Will you damage the other materials if you don't or is it just saving you some clean-up work?

You definitely do not have to tape the car off. But there are some advantages. One, as you mention, is in cleanup. I don't have to worry about polish and wax getting anywhere it should not, especially black plastic or rubber bits, which are a royal pain to remove wax from. Also, it prevents you from damaging something during the polishing stage. You can see that I've got the edges of the hood stripes taped, for example. These are vinyl, and I did it to prevent getting scratches or swirl marks in the softer material.
